The current system (RD 889/2022) distinguishes three routes, and choosing the wrong one means starting at a loss:

The critical part: degree and academic transcript (with grades and hours) apostilled in the country of origin, sworn translation of everything, valid ID and the fee paid correctly (check the current amount, in the range of €160–170 for university homologación/equivalencia). Every country has its quirks — requesting the apostille from Spain, for instance, may require granting power of attorney to someone back home: better to know before you start.
The legal deadline for a decision is 6 months; historical reality has often been longer, with recent efforts by the administration to clear backlogs. Practical translation: file it as soon as possible and file it flawless — and while it is decided, in non-regulated professions you can often work by proving the procedure is under way. If your goal is a regulated profession and it is urgent, designing the strategy (which route, which reference university, which documentation of hours) deserves half an hour of professional analysis rather than an extra year of waiting.
